SomnoDent MAS

The SomnoDent MAS (formerly SomnoMed MAS) is a Mandibular Advancement Splint designed to keep the airways open during the night. The manbile is a person's lower jaw and such an oral sleep appliance advances this lower jaw to create space in the back of the throat. This opens the throat and reduces the chance the tissue there collapses, causing either snoring, reduced airflow or an apnoea event (cessation in breathing).

Oral Sleep TherapyWorn in the mouth when sleeping

Oral sleep appliances are also known as Mandibular Advancement Devices (MAD), Mandibular Respositioning Devices (MRD) or Mandibular Repositioning Appliances (MRA). Any of these combinations refer to the same principle of advancing the lower jaw forward and preventing it from dropping back again, therefore keeping the airways open so the person wearing the splint can breath without obstructions.

Like a sports mouth guard, the SomnoDent oral sleep appliance is worn in the mouth but only when the patient wants to sleep. When asleep, muscles relax, the tongue can drop back and the throat can 'collapse', all of these combining to an obstruction called an apnoea event. Breathing stops and oxygen levels drop. This dangerous pattern in obstructive sleep apnoea can be reversed by ensuring the airways stay open, with the help of a simple yet ingenious invention called the SomnoDent MAS.

Custom-made for comfort and efficiency

The SomnoDent oral sleep appliance is a custom-made splint, which is placed over the teeth. The device consists of upper and lower dental plates with a unique patented fin-coupling component, which allows normal mouth opening and closing. The splint moves the lower jaw slightly forward. The lower jaw advancement is adjustable, which increases the effectiveness of the treatment. The design of the SomnoDent MAS is characterized by a number of key features that are significant improvements on existing MAS oral appliances. These improvements make the splint both comfortable and effective.

For the majority of patients, the SomnoDent oral sleep appliance is a highly effective solution to the problem of loud snoring and mild to moderate sleep apnoea.
